Pha Lai Nam Lai

One Tambon One Product (OTOP) project is one of the government’s urgent policies encouraging Thai communities to make use of Thai wisdom. The government helps impart modern knowledge and manage to introduce the products to the domestic and international markets through chain stores and outlets. The products that create jobs and income to Wiang Sa people are Pha Lai Nam Lai hand-woven fabrics and snacks are like khao larm and khao tan.

In rural villages in Wiang Sa district, particularly Ban Phai Ngam, the famous pha lai nam lai hand-woven fabric is produced. Pha lai nam lai is made of cotton. Its name means “flowing water” as its pattern resembles waves or stairs. Its design reflects local artistic and creative skills.

The process of weaving has been taught to the female members of the household by their grandmother or mother. So the same craft was carried on from generation to generation as a cultural heritage.

In the past, almost every house in rural villages owned a loom by which the villagers wove fabric for their household use and also for sale. When the farming was done, the women would spend time weaving fabric or other household items. Nowadays, farmer housewives gather in community production centers to weave lai nam lai cloths. Products made from the village’s hand-woven cloth are used for making dresses, colorful satchels and tung, a type of pennant used in religious rites.

These farmer housewives can support their families’ expenses from weaving lai nam lai cloths. Now the products from lai nam lai fabric are Ban Phai Ngam’s OTOP and famous among local people and tourists.
