Wat Boon Yuen

Most of the people in Wiang Sa are Buddhists. They like to go to the temple to make a merit and they love to live peacefully. There are many temples in Wiang Sa, but the most famous temple in Wiang Sa is Wat Boon Yuen because it is the Royal Temple (under Royal Patronage), very old and gorgeous.

Wat Boon Yuen is situated at Moo 4 Tumbon Klang Wiang, Wiang Sa district, Nan Province. The history of Wat Boon Yuen has been told from generation to generation as follows: That the temple was built at the same time as the beginning of Wiang Sa which was called Wiang Por in those days. Wiang Por was named after the first ruler of the city, Pra Ya Por.

The temple at that time was just a small monastery and it was named after the name of Boon Na village, so it was called Wat Boon Na. Wat Boon Na was situated on the land of the present morning market which still belongs to Wat Boon Yuen until today. Later on, the government officers and the people of Wiang Por thought that the area of the monastery would be too small and narrow for the future, so in B.E.2329 (1784 A.D.) they decided to move the temple up north to the more suitable location which was about 120 meters away from the old one.

The area of the new monastery was wider and located by (the mouth of) the Sa River which was connecting with the Nan River. This area used to be the forest of teak wood, and all the buildings in the monastery The main gate of the Vihara were made of teak wood, therefore the new temple was named Wat Pa Sak Ngarm which means “the temple of beautiful teak wood.” And then the name of the city was changed to “Wiang Sa” because of the Sa River nearby.

In B.E.2340 (1797 A.D.) Chao Fa Attaworapanyo, one of the rulers of the city of Nan and his people were willing to make merit by building the vihara at his temple. He had Muen Sappachang as the builder and Chao Rajawong as the sculptor of the main gate of the vihara. In B.E.2343 (1800 A.D.) Chao Fa Attaworapanyo built a standing Buddha image in the vihara and in B.E.2345 (1802 A.D.) He built a big pagoda near the vihara. Because of the standing style of the Buddha image, the name of the temple was changed to Wat Boon Yuen (“yuen” means “to stand”). Since the year of 1997 Wat Boon Yuen has been selected to be under Royal Patronage.
